Anti-ageing treatments for men

Although the world of beauty and cosmetic procedures has traditionally been associated with women, in recent years it has been a shift in men’s attitudes towards anti-ageing treatments, with more men taking care of their skin to look fresh and youthful. Whether men are looking to shape their face to conform with masculine ideals, boost their confidence or affirm their gender identity, non-surgical aesthetics, including filler and botulinum toxin treatments for men, are on the rise and here is why.

When it comes to ageing, men don’t feel any different to women. At the end of the day, gravity doesn’t distinguish sex and finds us all, no matter how many green drinks you tip back or how diligently you hit the gym. Jowls, a deep frown line, wrinkles around the eyes called ‘crow’s feet,’ brown spots, enlarged pores, or increased oiliness are some of the many skin concerns men face when growing older. So while once upon a time, injectables used to be frowned upon, or seen as feminine by men, with the latest techniques used in non-invasive treatments, which make botox and fillers undetectable, it’s easier than ever for men to get tweaks to improve their facial structure without drawing attention.

As a doctor and aesthetic practitioner I see the benefits of non-surgical treatments and specialist skincare for men not only as a way to provide aesthetic enhancement and anti-ageing solutions but also to improve their emotional wellbeing.

I use botulinum toxin and dermal fillers to reverse the signs of ageing, enhance masculine features, add definition, contour the face and create alignment, and I combine this with a clinically proven skincare to improve the health, quality and condition of the skin in the long run.

Each treatment is tailored to suit male anatomy and takes a holistic approach, looking at the face as a whole instead of one particular area. This is a more effective approach for men’s treatments because often clients don’t have a specific idea in mind, they simply want to look younger or more masculine.

What treatments work well for men?

  1. Botulinum toxin type A injections

Like their female counterparts, most men develop wrinkles on their forehead and around the eyes as they age. Two of the most common concerns are deep frown lines and crow’s feet.  ‘Bro-tox’ (aka, ‘Botox’ for men) injections can be used to smooth out these unwanted lines, and return a more youthful and relaxed appearance.

  1. Dermal fillers

In men, dermal filler treatments are used to create an overall refreshed and more youthful look whilst adding definition and strength to the face, creating a better balance.

Filler treatments such as restoring volume to the temples, cheeks and tear trough are great at replacing lost volume in the face. In addition, they can help shape certain areas, such as the chin, nose and jawline to achieve a more masculine look.

The most frequent treatments include filler for:

Square jaw

This is the perfect treatment to add definition and structure to the male face. Dermal filler can be placed at specific points in the jaw to create a more chiselled, masculine jawline.

Wider cheekbones

Strong, high cheekbones are also considered an attractive male feature. They can be achieved by injecting dermal filler into the cheeks to restore volume, plump out the face naturally, and give a gentle lift.

Chin

Lower face contours and a strong chin definition are aesthetically important to a lot of men. This dermal filler treatment is a way of improving these areas and is particularly useful to help enhance the chin and side profile.

Temples and tear trough

The stress of everyday life and the effects of ageing can leave a man with tired looking skin and hollowness under the eye area. Skin and contours can be boosted and rejuvenated using dermal filler.

Carefully placed dermal filler can be used to re-volumise and restore this area for a rejuvenated, refreshed appearance.

Naso-labial folds

The loss of fat under the skin can result in the loss of facial volume and skin elasticity. As a result, men may appear gaunt and overly tired with more accentuated naso-labial (nose to mouth) and marionette lines (mouth to jawline) in the lower face.

Dermal filler is perfect to fill out and lift these folds, and when partnered with cheek filler to lift the mid-face, it can take a good few years off the face.
